Abstract:
Microplastics continuously degrade in the environment, posing a serious threat to global ecology and biological health. Besides accumulating in various ecosystems, microplastics can enter organisms through multiple pathways, adversely affecting the nervous, respiratory, and digestive systems of animals. Existing studies have confirmed that microplastics exhibit reproductive and developmental toxicity and can interfere with gametogenesis, embryonic development, and offspring health. We reviewed the research progress on the reproductive and developmental toxicity of microplastics in different biological models, with a focus on analyzing potential molecular mechanisms such as oxidative stress, inflammatory response, endocrine disruption, and epigenetic regulation. Furthermore, we discussed the prospects for the development and application of toxicity mitigation strategies, including antioxidants, Chinese herbal medicines, and probiotics. This paper aims to provide a scientific reference for the study of the reproductive and developmental toxicology of microplastics and environmental risk assessment.
